BRICS now have six more members, making up the super BRICS+
Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Argentina, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, UAE, are now part of the growing BRICS family.
United States and the West are not happy
Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the BRICS have opponents – countries of the “golden billion” – who are trying to replace the system of international law based on their own selfish rules.
“I would like to note that BRICS does not compete with anyone, does not oppose anyone, but it is also obvious that this objective process, the process of creating a new world order, still has irreconcilable opponents who try to slow down this process, to prevent the establishment of new independent centers of development and influence in the world,” Putin said at a meeting of the five leaders in the BRICS-plus format.
The President of Russian federation also noted that the BRICS countries are in favour of the formation of a multipolar world order and preserving the diversity of national cultural borders.
The BRICS Summit is in Johannesburg August 22-24 and attended by the leaders of China, India, Brazil and South Africa, with Russia represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Putin is in the summit via videoconference.
Argentina, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE and Ethiopia are fully on board.
As membership is by invitation after the expression and application of intent, the BRICS leaders have decided to invite Argentina, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, the UAE and Saudi Arabia to join the group, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said.
“We have decided to invite the Argentine Republic, the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates to become full members of BRICS. The membership will take effect from January 1, 2024.”
Alternative payment system on the table
The leaders of the BRICS countries believe that the time has come to use local currencies and alternative payment systems. BRICS is concerned about conflicts in the world and confirms that it stands for a peaceful solution, through a dialogue.
Russian President Vladimir Putin commended Cyril Ramaphosa, the president of South Africa for his diplomatic skill when discussing issues of expanding. Adaptation of the final BRICS declaration was not easy, including on the issue of enlargement, Putin added.
More Memberships coming!
Earlier, South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor said that BRICS had agreed on the issue of enlargement, and adopted a document outlining its principles.
BRICS unite the world’s largest developing economies, namely, Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. About two dozen other countries have expressed their interest in joining the club, South Africa’s BRICS Sherpa Anil Sooklal said earlier this month.
